Study on toll of technological age
PA Wellington A study is being made to determine whether the technological age has taken its toll on schoolchildren’s physical condition. The study will look at 5000 children at the ages of seven, nine, 11, 14 and 15 to see if children today are as fit as those 10 years ago and to compare them with children overseas. According to the instigator of the project, Mrs Margaret Campbell, an education officer in physical education and health, New Zea-
land is one of the few countries never to have done such a survey. She said that cars, television, and computer games have all combined to make physical activity a low priority in the lives of children. Three people from the faculty of physical education at the University of Otago are compiling information. Results of the random testing of 5000 pupils should be available before the end of next year, Mrs Campbell said.
