Fatal crash

PA Wellington Emergency services members believe a car which crashed off a Hutt motorway flyover and plummeted 10 metres into the Wellington rail yards early on Sunday may have rolled over or skidded first. The driver was killed. He was William Te Wahia Jardine, aged 27, of Newlands. Mr Jardine’s Ford Fairmont car disintegrated

around him in the accident, thought to have occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. on Sunday. Spokesmen said yesterday that marks had been found on the centre median strip of the motorway, suggesting that Mr Jardine may have lost control of the car. They believe the car must already have been rolling to have cleared the metal barrier along the edge of the flyover.
