Rakaia River
Sir,—M. White-Johnson incorrectly asserts that the Rakaia will never fall below 80 cumecs under current management proposals. Both the Draft Conservation Order and the North Canterbury Catchment Board draft management plan stipulate minimum flow levels of 80 cumecs; but this is at the gorge only. Considerable natural loss occurs between the gorge and the sea. The extent of this loss is barely known as research data are minimal. However, when the mouth allegedly closed earlier this year, the gorge flow was 115 cumecs. Is it any wonder there is concern for what would happen at the mouth if gorge flows are held at 80, 90, or even 100 cumecs? — Yours, etc., BILL HORSLEY, Rangiora. July 17, 1984.
