Hockey win for N.Z.
NZPA Los Angeles The New Zealand men’s hockey team survived some brutal play in its second -pre-Olympic Internationa] to beat the United States, 10, in Vancouver yesterday. Three American players were sent off, which the New Zealand team manager, Dave Coulter, said reflected the way the opposition played. After accusing Canada of being a physical side when the Kiwis won, 2-0, on Wednesday, Coulter said the United States were far worse. “Obviously the U.S.A. went out with the sole intent of playing for a draw and did everything they could to ensure that result,” he said. “They body-checked, hacked and slashed. When decisions went against them they hit the ball away and that three men were sent off bore testimony to their game. Apart from the first 10 minutes, New Zealand dominated the game. But it could not break through the packed American defence and rough house tactics until 17 minutes into the second half when Laurie Gallen scored a field goal.
