Ship damages harbour pickets

Pickets on the western side of Lyttelton’s inner harbour entrance suffered minor damage yesterday morning when they were clipped by the inter-island trader Spirit of Free Enterprise.

The accident happened at 6.50 a.m. when the vessel was entering the harbour to berth.

The Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour, said the vessel damaged nine upright pickets and had then swung round into a parallel position against the oil wharf. She was then escorted by tug to her regular berth at No. 7 wharf. No vessel was berthed at the oil wharf at the time. The chairman of the Pacifica Shipping Company, Mr Brooke McKenzie, said the Spirit of Free Enterprise was not damaged. He would seek a full report on the incident.
