Board seeks subsidy for odour plant

The Christchurch Drainage Board will seek a Government subsidy for its planned $l.B million odour control plant at the Bromley sewage-treatment works.

When the plant is approved in principle and in detail by the Health Department and the Ministry of Works and Development, the board will apply for a subsidy, which could cover 10 per cent of the cost of the plant The board’s chief engineer, Mr H. P. Hunt told its operations and services committee yesterday that results from a pilot odour control plant at Bromley had been assessed. These would be used as guidelines for a full-scale plant, and tenders for the filter cover probably would be called in August. The proposed design of the plant was flexible enough to be extended if necessary, and could be altered if it did not adequately control odour. A detailed report on the pilot plant results and the proposed plant is being prepared. The board hopes to have the plant open in the summer of 1985-86, and the Health Department has said that the board might be

able to apply direct for the subsidy. The board expects a delay of at least three months before the contract can be let for the dome of the new plant A board member, Mr R. B. Wright said the board should give extra assistance if necessary to complete the work on time. “I am concerned that people in this area have suffered enough,” he said. If the board could not obtain a subsidy from the Government it would proceed with the work anyway, said Mr Wright. The chairman of the committee, Mr C. H. Russell, said the board would rather get a Government subsidy for the work, to lessen the cost to Christchurch ratepayers.
