Funds wanted for community officer
The Lyttelton Borough Council’s finance committee has recommended that an application be made to the Labour Department for employing a community development officer.
The committee wants an officer employed for a 12month trial period under the Project Employment Programme to determine if one is warranted in the borough fulltime.
The recommendation comes after an address to the council’s May meeting by an advisory officer of the Ministry of Recreation and Sport, Ms Devon Cooke, and
a community development officer at Kaikoura, Mrs Nola Stubbersfield. The committee also recommended that an approach be made to the Heathcote County Council to discuss sharing the cost of employing an officer to work for both authorities. School bus The Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, has announced his decision not to axe free bus services carrying secondary school pupils from Lyttelton to Christchurch. This reverses an earlier decision by the Education
Department to stop the service in February next year. Cr Mary Cretney said yesterday that several parents who had written to the Minister had been told recently of his decision to retain the free service for Lyttelton pupils. Cr Cretney said she was very pleased with the decision. She believed it was made after the Minister was made aware that pupils were unable to cycle through the road tunnel and that Lyttelton Borough was not included in the metropolitan transport area.
