Strike hits six big hotels

NZPA-AAP Melbourne A strike has crippled six big Melbourne hotels, with usual guest services being cut to a minimum. About 2000 members of the Liquor and Allied Trades Union walked off the job at 10 a.m. yesterday (local time) over a claim for a 38-hour working week. They are not expected to return to work at Melbourne’s Hilton Regent, Southern Cross, Chateau Commodore, Windsor, and Hotel Australia until late tomorrow morning. A seventh hotel, Noahs, is expected to be brought into the dispute today.

The strike involves most hotel employees and has left the hotels without cooks, housekeepers, doormen, and bartenders.

Executives and apprentices have filled some of the gaps, providing essential services to house guests.

Most of the hotels have restricted services to house guests and have closed public bars. Other services such as laundering, bag carrying, or valet duties are not being given.
