‘Crime rate must be tackled’

PA Tauranga The escalating crime rate must be tackled by whichever party becomes government, according to the president of the Police Association, Mr Keith Morrow. Speaking in Tauranga during a national tour to bring the police Up to date with issues such as superannuation and early retirement, Mr Morrow said everywhere he travelled people were afraid to walk the streets at night and their homes were no longer immune from burglary.

“How long will the people of New Zealand put up with the escalating crime rate?” he said. The association was not backing any particular party, but Mr Morrow said whichever was elected would have to face up to law and order issues. “Some of the parties have suggested increasing police numbers. But before this is done, the Police Association would like to see a careful study made of the increasing crime rate to see if better us? can be made of the police numbers we already have.”
