Soviet sorties in Cook Strait?

PA Tauranga Soviet submarines regularly make reconnaissance sorties into Cook Strait, according to the National Party candidate for Tauranga, Mr Winston Peters. He believes they want to establish the geography of the seabed along the coast,, and that they could be a danger to shipping. New Zealand should look seriously at taking the issue to the international court, he said. “We could base our case on potentially harmful shipping using the water way,” he said. “These submarines

have been seen.” Mr Peters, who as member of Parliament for Hunua was a member of the Government caucus defence committee, said he had got his information from defence sources. | "The geography under the water is just as important as the geography above it. They would already know what was on the land,” he said. Mr Peters said he referred people who were sceptical about the Russian presence in Cook Strait to what had happened in Sweden.
