Aranui women win easily

Big Softie Aranui and Halswell share the lead after second round games in the championship section of the women’s division one basketball competition at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Aranui overwhelmed Bumham 92-22, while Halswell edged out Continental Caterers Rangiora, 39-37. The Patrons Trophy winner, Mairehau, recorded a solid 7644 win over University, but having lost its game to Aranui on May 5 now shares third place with Checkers, which had the bye on Saturday. With restricted use of the stadium during the next two week-ends, a full round of games will be fitted in on Wednesday evening. Platings in the championship section are:

Mairehau Service Station 76, University 44

Mairehau: V. Howard 18, Kim Smith 14, A Fidow 12, J. Lamont 9, Karen Smith 6, L Lee 6, M. Cuttance 5, S. Gabites 4, L. McLintock 2. University: W. Beri 14, J. Burrows 10, G. Adam 6, A. Costain 6, K. Richardson 6, R. Walker 2.

Mairehau continued its improved display and soundly beat University. However, University, strengthened by the inclusion of its league player, Rose Walker, produced one of its best performances of the season to test the strong Mairehau defence. Viv Howard led Mairehau’s effort with an energetic display. She contributed 18 points, while Kim Smith capitalised on her limited opportunities to score 14. Anna Fidow had her best game of the season. Isobel Lee and Margaret Cuttance controlled much of the play to give Mairehau a 4222 lead by half-time. Howard pressed home three good baskets with impressive footwork early in the second spell. Wendy Beri played some enterprising basketball / for University, snapping up several good baskets and distributing the ball well. Julie Burrows and Karen Richardson also worked hard, while

Gay Adam and Adele Costain had their moments.

Big Softie Aranui 92, Bumham 22

Aranui: A. Pule 21, D. Martin 20, S. Richards 18, T. Costain 12, M. Costain 11, L. Richardson 6, D. Galloway 4. Bumham: C. Haerewa 9, S. Mitchell 5, L O’Connor 4, C. Williams 2, K. Flavell 2. The Aranui side looked much different with the addition of four league players. Di Martin and Margaret Costain returned and Debbie Galloway (formerly Mairehau) and Shona Richards (Bumside) joined their league team-mates to strengthen Aranui, which had been sustained through the Patrons Trophy round by players from its B team. One regular player, Vicky Cowley, watched helplessly from the sideline with her leg in plaster from top to toe, while a league player and new National representative, Sue Lines, rested her weakened ankles.

Burnham, on the other hand was severely weakened by die absence of Puhi Milner and her daughter, Rhonda, and the fast-improving Rangimarie Te Paea. Some courageous performances from B • team players, especially Cathy Haerewa and Christine Williams, gave Bumham’s score some respectability. The Aranui players almost queued up to score basket after basket and it took till the seventeenth minute before Shirley Mitchell broke the drought for Burnham, with Aranui then ahead 31-2. Aranui was in front 41-6 at the break and steadily increased the lead with precision teamwork and a variety of moves.

Martin (20 points) showed many -of the skills she has developed in. the league with a

fine display of attacking basketball. Angela Pule, who last week had her first league opportunity, rebounded both boards strongly to lead Aranui’s effort with 21 points, while Thelma Costain (12) and Shona Richards (18) worked consistently. Halswell 39, Rangiora 37 Halswell: L. Scott 10, M. Van Vugt 9, K. Siave 7, S. Elliott 6, T. Harrington 4, Z. West 2, S. French 1.

Rangiora: Y. Kerr 13, S. Blackadder 10, I Harris 4, P. Rollinson 4, L. Stanicich 3, M. J. Ives 3.

The giant killers of the Patrons Trophy competition, Rangiora, plummeted with a poor shooting display against a concentrated team effort from Halswell Both sides had their problems at the free throwline, Halswell missing 15 out of 22 attempts while Rangiora fared only a shade better, missing 12 out of 19 attempts. The game lacked any sparkle, especially in the first half but with the lead changing hands at least five times in the second spell, it did hold some spectator appeal. Baisweil's Linda Scott lacked her usual accuracy on her outside shot, but Marinda Van Vugt hunted the ball eagerly and shot quickly from limited opportunities: Kathy Siave filled her usual steadying role, while Therese Harrington, persevered well on defence.

Halswell contained the freerunning Sandra Blackadder, restricting her to 10 points, and Penny Rollinson and Leona Stanicich failed to make good use of a feast of ball available to them. Yvonne Kerr tried hard for Rangiora and Mary Jane Ive’s solid efforts went largely unrewarded.
