Fouls rule out Steiness
The Steiness (mid-Canter-bury) division two A women’s basketball team lost its game against Aranui B at Cowles Stadium on Saturday in unusual circumstances. It was ahead on the board when, with just six seconds remaining, it was reduced to only one player and, under the rules, had to forfeit the game.
Because of a tournament in Ashburton, Steiness arrived with only six players, leaving
it with one instead of two on the bench. However, after an evenly-matched first half, it led 20-18 and stretched this to 36-22 early in the second half.
Then Steiness ran into foul troubles. It lost its first player, after five fouls, in the. eleventh minute and two more in the fourteenth and sixteenth minutes respectively.
Aranui recovered to trail 3846 and with the game into its last minute, Steiness had an-
other player fouled out. Aranui narrowed the gap to four points, 46-42, before a fifth Steiness picked up her fifth foul and was dismissed.
This left the team with only one player, Tonee Wills, on the court. Under the rules a team cannot continue with just one player. The official result was a 2-0 win to Aranui.
No-one could recall a game at Cowles Stadium ending in such a fashion previously.
