Maxwell Mirror Group bidder?

NZPA-AAP London Speculation on the future ownership of two of Britain's biggest newspaper groups — Fleet Holdings and Mirror Newspapers — is mounting, according to "The Times."

The Rupert Murdoch owned newspaper says "the Socialist millionaire Robert Maxwell” is said to be a possible Mirror Group bidder, amid reports of intense behind-the-scenes activity. Meanwhile, the shares' of Fleet — publishers of the “Daily Express" and “Sunday Express" newspapers, and the “Daily Star" — jumped 7p (lie) to 182 p ($3.91) at one stage before closing at 178 p ($3.83).

More than a million shares changed hands in the expectation that the Australian entrepreneur, Robert Holmes a'Court, was about to make a takeover bid. At the same time, stock market rumours were growing that Reed International may not after all float its subsidiary Mirror Group Newspapers as a separate public company. Mr Maxwell, the former Labour Party Parliamentarian who owns the British Printing and Communications Corporation, was widely believed to be keen to buy Mr Holmes a’Court’s 10 per cent stake in Fleet Holdings.
