M.P. will throw petition in bin

PA Wellington The member of Parliament for Invercargill, Mr N. P. H. Jones, has said that he would throw a petition opposing the proposed All Black rugby tour of South Africa into the wastepaper basket. Mr Jones said that he had put up with too much personal abuse from Hart during the 1981 Springbok tour. “It has not come across my desk yet but if it does it will go straight into the wastepaper basket,” he said. He had not thrown other petitions away. His attitude to Hart was a personal matter. The Speaker, Sir Richard

Harrison, has ruled that no member of Parliament is obliged to present a petition to Parliament. He made the decision after the member for Pakuranga, Mr T. de V. Hunt, declined to present a petition opposing the planned tour next year. The Deput}' Leader of the Opposition, Mr Palmer, urged members to present petitions on behalf of their constituents. It was a well established custom for members to present a petition, even when they personally disagreed with it, he said. They did not commit themselves to the views in a petition by presenting it.
