Second title

PA Whangarei Kevin Coombe, a Morrinsville farmer, won the national indoor bowls singles title for a second time at Whangarei yesterday.

He raced to a 24-12 win over Sadie Middlemass, a Hamilton grandmother, in the all-Waikato final.

Coombe, aged 34, is only the second player to win the

national singles crown twice. He was also successful in 1981.

The other player to win twice, Ron Fleming of Manukau, went down to Middlemass in one of the semi-finals. Middlemass, down 5-7 midway through this game, staged a tremendous finish to win 12-7 in what was regarded as the game of the tournament.
