Deportation move rejected

PA Auckland Auckland region delegates of the Social Credit party have rejected a call to deport non-citizens convicted of violent crimes as an alternative to imprisonment.

A Pakuranga candidate and party police spokesman, Mr Neil Morrison, supported the remit, saying it would make intending residents think about the standards expected in New Zealand society. A Te Atatu delegate and policeman, Mr Michael Webber, told the party’s regional conference that it was cheaper to deport offenders than put them in prison.

Opponents to the remit argued that long-term residents who had committed one offence could be unfairly treated. One speaker feared that with the deterrent factor of a jail term removed, people who did not mind being deported could be encouraged to break the law.
