Marae appeal disappoints
A disappointng response to a public appeal for the Nga Hau E Wha National Marae in Christchurch has not disheartened the organisers.
The marae trust board has hired professional help to investigate the best way of fund-raising. An appeal throughout Canterbury two weeks ago has raised only about $6OOO so far, well short of the $lOO,OOO target aimed at. The figure also falls short of recovery costs of the appeal, according to the trust’s chairman, Mr Peter Heal, yesterday. The money was intended to go towards costs of the wharekai, the kitchen and
dining room building, which is expected to be completed in October next year. The total cost of building is $840,000.
Mr Heal said that the trust could not be optimistic about reaching its goal now but money was still coming in. One gift of $lOOO had been received at the weekend.
Probably the trust’s bigget disappointment was the lack of support by Christchurch people to “their marae,” Mr Heal said.
People who still have the addressed envelopes can post them free of cost, or gifts can be left at the marae.
