Rubbish fires
Sir, — I wholeheartedly agree with J. S. McGregor. Backyard rubbish fires should be prohibited during the winter months in Christchurch. These fires are quite unnecessary, as all garden rubbish can be ” composted. It is very distressing, on a sunny day, to be forced by the smoke from rubbish fires to remain indoors, when, for months on end, the foul night air makes evening strolls distasteful. Appealing to people’s consideration has no effect. By-laws are urgently needed in Christchurch. — Yours, etc.,
