The band with a nuclear-free stand

The Australian rock band, Midnight Oil, has added its voice to the Nuclear-Free Zone Committee’s call for a nuclear-free New Zealand. The band, known for its. political stance on nuclear arms, played at a concert in Christchurch last evening. Before going on stage, two band members, Pete Garrett and Robert Hirst, took time for a press conference with Mr Larry Ross of the Nuclear-Free Zone Committee. The Australians supported Mr Ross’s statement that the Government had a clear mandate to declare New Zealand a nuclear-free zone because 62 per cent of its population lived in nuclear-

free areas. “We would like to see New Zealand take a positive attitude towards doing something about this issue. We endorse what is already being done," Mr Garrett said. The band was strongly committed to speaking out about nuclear arms and the subject was an integral part of its music. Midnight Oil often approached people working for nuclear-free zones in centres they visited. “We hope New Zealand can lead Australia on this,” Mr Garrett said. Mr Ross said the committee was happy to be associated with Midnight Oil in a common cause.
