Marist close to Cup

Marist-Western Suburbs will gain possession of the Tavendale Cup as the leading team after the first full round of the Canterbury rugby league premiership if it beats Linwood at the Show Grounds this afternoon. Although Linwood was upset by Eastern Suburbs last week-end, it is a club with a wealth of experience and Marist will have no easy task retaining its unbeaten record. A draw with Halswell in its last appearance slowed Marist’s advance. But even should it be beaten, Marist would still take the cup if it succeeded in heading off

Hornby on the night of June 13. It has already been a most unpredictable club season, with Marist and Halswell rising from the bottom two positions in the 1983 premiership to lead their much more favoured rivals. Halswell, too, has an important task this afternoon — it is seeking its first win over Papanui since being granted premier status in 1979. The changed face of the club scene is mirrored by the comparative banishment of last season’s grand finalists, Hornby and Sydenham, to the No. 2 playing field.
