Deputy mayor selected
PA Hamilton Hamilton’s Deputy Mayor, Mrs Margaret Evans, has been confirmed as the only New Zealand Party nomination for Hamilton East in the General Election and as a candidate for the party’s deputy leadership. Mrs Evans has said that she expected to hold the party’s “shadow” portfolios of social welfare,’local government and
internal affairs, and housing. However, she said she would continue as a city councillor and Deputy Mayor whatever happened in the election. Mrs Evans’s nomination was the only one received by the electorate, three other contenders having withdrawn when her intentions became known. Nominations closed on Wednesday evening, and her nom-
ination has been confirmed by the party’s Wellington office. The Hamilton East seat is held for National .by Dr I. J. Shearer, who holds three Ministerial portfolios. Mrs Evans, aged 39, has two children. She is married to a Hamilton lawyer, Mr R. D. Evans. She has been a city councillor since 1974, topped the poll in 1980 and 1983, and was elected Deputy Mayor in 1982.
