Party head slams sporting ban

PA Wellington Placing nations in Coventry because of their internal politics is reprehensible, illogical and intellectually dishonest, according to the leader of the New Zealand Party, Mr Bob Jones. In a statement giving extracts of a speech made at the Auckland Sportsman of the Year dinner last evening, Mr Jones said his party would uphold the principles of freedom and individual liberty in dealing with sports contacts with other countries. “We witness hypocritical

stances on sporting contacts with South Africa when, in the name of freedom, individual liberty is frustrated,” Mr Jones said. “If building bridges is a valid approach to the Soviet Union, as I believe it is, then surely it is equally so with South Africa. “The political party I head believes in freedom. “Politicians throughout the world are doing enormous harm to their own people by their prostitution of the very essence of sport, namely friendly, competitive rivalry,” he said.
