Hockey teams qualify

Two Christchurch teams moved into the second round of the H. W. Smith Trophy national interclub men’s hockey championship with first round wins yesterday. Pegasus entered the second round at the expense of another Christchurch team, Sydenham, and Selwyn, the defending champion in the competition, won its first-round match against Wakanui at Ashburton. A third Christchurch team, Woolston, travelled to Dunedin but bowed out of the championship when it lost 1-2 to Otago University. Three other Christchurch teams, Harewood, High School Old Boys and Redcliffs, had byes into the second round. Unfortunately the draw has thrown Old Boys and Harewood together in the

second round, which is scheduled to be played by June 24. Pegasus will play United of Dunedin away, Selwyn will play Otago University, probably in Christchurch; and Redcliffs will play Albany (Dunedin) also in Christchurch in other second- round matches. Pegasus was two goals up against Sydenham at halftime yesterday and deserved its lead because it played with more control and purpose than its opponent The young Pegasus forward line played some attractive hockey in the firsthalf and the goals were scored by Phil Teague and Andrew Dove.
