Decisive league win
Canterbury B qualified for the final of the South Island second division rugby league championship when it easily accounted for Otago-Southland, 38-0, at Dunedin yesterday. A very impressive Canterbury side scored six tries. One was scored by the young stand-off half, Phil Bancroft, who also kicked seven goals to finish with a personal total of 18 points. “It was an excellent team
performance,” the Canterbury B coach, Frank Endacott, said after the match. Mr Endacott said that Bancroft and the prop, Adrian Shelford, were quite outstanding, and also had special praise for the back three forwards, Mike Smith, Tom Amosa, and Darryl Hawker. “The forwards mounted a strong defence line to play Otago-Southland out of the game, and laid on plenty of
possession for the backs to show their skills. Vaughan Low and Mike Kerrigan scored classical wing tries,” he said. Canterbury B will meet West Coast B in the final next month. Scorers.— Canterbury B 38 (H. Wihongi, V. F. Low, M. S. Kerrigan, J. M. Blazey, A. T. Shelford, P. Bancroft tries; Bancroft seven goals) beat Otago-Southland 0. Half-time, 14-0.
