Valuable painting on loan
PA Wellington One of New Zealand’s most valuable paintings will be lent to the National Museum of American Art in Washington. John Singleton Copley’s “Portrait of Mrs Humphrey Devereaux,” valued at $U5750,000 will be on a three-year loan to the American gallery. The National Gallery director, Mr Luit Bieringa, says it is hoped the loan will lead to more exchanges of works. John Singleton Copley is regarded as one of America’s most outstanding portrait painters. Ironically the American gallery has no work by the artist, hence the importance of the loan.
