Team effort works for Mairehau

A concentrated team effort from Mairehau caused the downfall of the more favoured Admiral Lodge Checkers team, 44-41, in the main game of the women’s division one basketball competition, played in Cowles Stadium on Saturday. The competition leader, Big Softie Aranui, was made to work hard by Continental Caterers Rangiora to win, 5240, while Halswell dominated an out of form Burnham, 52-35. Placings in the Patrons Trophy are:

Checkers 41 Mairehau: Kim Smith 12, M. Cuttance 8, V. Howard 8, B. Palmer 7, Karen Smith 4, A. Fidow 2, J. Lamont 1. Checkers: B. Carr 11, B. McLeod 9, M. MuUany 9, C. Heremaia 6, S. Constable 4, G. Westenra 2. Concentration and persistence by the more experienced Mairehau team members enabled it to snatch a dramatic victory from Checkers, 44-41, on Saturday. Two scoring errors during the game added to the confusion. Entering the last 30 seconds, Checkers grabbed control of the baU and seemingly ahead 41-40, chose to freeze the ball

and play out time. Mairehau hustled every pass with the Smith sisters, Kim and Karen, finally making an intercept. Kim scored with five or so seconds remaining to give Mairehau victory. 42-41. A check of the score sheets by the officials added a further two points to Mairehau’s score. The same thing happened earlier when Checkers was wrongly credited with a basket. Big Softie Aranui 52, Continental Caterers Rangiora 40 Aranui: A. McMullan 15, L. Richardson 12, A. Pule 11, M. Grimwood 7, V. Cowley 4, T. Costain 2, A. Burmingham 1. Rangiora 40: S. Blackadder 12, L. Stanicich 9, Y. Kerr 8, M. J. Ives 7,'W. Hawkes 2, J. Harris 2. Forceful play from the league team member, Ann McMullan, gave Aranui the edge 27-23 in the first half against the fast-running country side. Controlled play from Thelma Costain and Vicki Cowley enabled Aranui to keep Rangiora under control. Angela Pule dominated the rebound ball on both boards while Louise Richardson used her height effectively. Halswell 52, Burnham 35 Halswell: L. Scott 11, S. Elliott 10, M. van Vugt 10, K. Siave 8, S. French 6, T. Harrington 4, Z. West 3. Burnham: P. Milner 7, R. Te Paea 7, S. Mitchell 6, C. Williams 4, R. Milner 4, K. Flavell 4, H. Tangiora 3. Bumham, which had shown

much promise in its first season in the women’s A grade, played badly, allowing HalsweU to dominate, particularly in the first spell. HalsweU’s more disciplined team effort gave it the edge.
