Rehearsal for jubilee celebrations
Members of the Shirley Intermediate School orchestra are conducted by Miss Pauline Collins at the school in ,£> rehearsal for the school s fiftieth anniversary celebrations. The celebrations will be held at Queen’s Birthday week-end. The orchestra and choir will perform music written especially for the jubilee at the reunion ceremony on Saturday, June 2, and at a special church service on Sunday, June 3. About 1000 people are expected to attend the cele-
brations, including first-day pupils, and one of the firstday teachers, Mrs Lillian McCarthy (nee Mitchell). A former caretaker, Mr George Goodall, will help plant a jubilee tree on Saturday. A photographic exhibition depicting the school’s history will be on display, as. well as school and art work by present pupils. On Friday those former pupils who feel energetic will be able to participate in a sports day at the school.
Later that evening a film made by pupils in 1958 will be shown. Called “The Siege of Orakau,” it dealt with the end of the Waikato wars, and was filmed among the lupins in North Brighton. On Saturday evening a ball for former pupils and past and present teachers will be held in the Students’ Union at the University of Canterbury. On Monday, June 4, children at the school will perform a Maori welcome for guests at a picnic at Springbank.
