$180,000 given to schools
The Post Office Savings Bank has paid grants totalling ?180,000 to all schools which participated in the school banking scheme during 1983. Most schools in New Zealand were involved in the scheme, and four achieved more than 10,000 deposits during the year, said the Chief Postmaster for Christchurch, Mr Syd Bradley. “The Post Office makes these grants in appreciation of teachers’ and parents' support in encouraging children to save,” he said. The amount given to each school was assessed according to the number of deposits lodged during the year. The grants could be either credited to the school’s Post Office Savings Bank account or could be presented in cheque form to be used for the pupils’ cultural and recreational activities, said Mr Bradley.
