Police appeal for witness
Christchurch detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have seen two robbers fleeing a butchery in Shirley on Thursday evening, where they had shut a butcher in his freezer. By last evening, no-one had been in touch with the police with information about the armed hold-up at the Shirley Butchery, in Shirley Road, said Detective Senior-Sergeant Michael Muddiman. The two men, who wore pantyhose over their heads, escaped with $l5OO in cash and cheques. They shut the butcher, Mr Warren
Battersby, in his freezer and told him to stay there. Mr Battersby, who was not hurt, left the freezer about 10 minutes later and called the police. The police would like to hear from anyone who saw two men leave the butchery about 8 p.m., the time of the robbery, said Detective Senior-Sergeant Muddiman. The robber who carried a sawn-off shotgun is described as stocky, about 173 cm (sft Bin) tall, and wore a waterproof khaki shirt. The other man was about 176 cm (sft 9in) tall, and wore a light-blue flannel beach hat.
