Youth jailed for fire-bombing
PA Timaru An Ashburton youth was sentenced in the District Court at Timaru yesterday to six months imprisonment after the fire-bombing of the Ashburton police station last December 30. Dean Robert Rush had admitted charges of attempted arson, unlawful possession of a Molotov cocktail and car conversion. Judge Fraser also sentenced Rush to one month’s imprisonment on each of the lesser charges, to be concurrent with the arson sentence. The sentence is to be followed by 18 months periodic detention. Earlier this week two other Ashburton youths were acquitted by a jury on charges of attempted arson and possession of a Molotov cocktail. Both had pleaded not guilty. Counsel for Rush, Mr J. R. McGlashan, said Rush
had not been a leading party in an incident in which a group of youths had. been involved in the throwing of a Molotov cocktail at the police station. Rush had been elected by
the group to drive to the police station. “He was perhaps put in a position of looking soft or chicken if he had pulled out at this stage,” said Mr McGlashan.
