Viggers’ squash benefit
The High School Old Boys squash tournament, sponsored by Naturally New Zealand, proved to be a Viggers benefit at the week-end. Paul Viggers, ranked No. 3 in New Zealand, won the men’s title after being taken to five games in the final by Robbie Burnett, and Carolyn Viggers easily won the women’s title, conceding only five points to Freda Walker? There was a titanic struggle for honours in the men’s division two final before Nigel Lioyd (Burnside) scraped home aga'inst Tony Robinson (Christchurch Football), 9-5, 3-9, 8-10, 10-9, 10-8, after 94min. Robinson had an amazing 12 match balls, several of them in the fourth game. Results:— Men’s open Quarter-finals: P. Viggers (Sumner) beat S. Wren (Sumner). 9-0, 9-0, 9-0; J. B. Oakley (Christchurch Football) beat L. C. Sparks (Marist), 9-6, 9-6, 9-6; R. Burnett (Linwood) beat J. H. Christensen (Sumner), 9-0, 9-2, 9-4; E. Smail (Football) beat W. Seebeck (Christchurch), 1-9, 9-7, 10-8, 79. 9-6. Semi-finals: Viggers beat Oakley, 9-3. 8-9, 9-6, 9-3; Burnett beat Smail. 10-8, 9-2. 9-4.
Final: Viggers beat Burnett, 9-1, 9-2, 7-9, 3-9, 9-2. Plav-off for third: Oakley beat Smail, 9-7, 9-3, 5-9, 9-4. Special plate: Wren beat Christensen, 9-6, 3-9, 9-2, 9-7. Men’s division two Semi-finals: T. Robinson (Football) beat P. Bremmers (Lancaster Park), 9-3, 9-3, 6-9, 9-3; N. Lloyd (Burnside) beat B. Gardiner (Marist), 10-8, 5-9, 9-7, 5-9, 9-4. Final: Lloyd beat Robinson, 9-5, 3-9, 8-10, 10-9, 10-8. Special plate: L. Wilson (Christchurch) beat E. Post (Christchurch), 9-7, 3-9, 10-8, 92. Women’s open Quarter-finals: C. Hargreaves (Burnside), 10- 9-7, 9-5; F. Walker (Linwood) beat M. Hunt (St Andrew’s), 9-4, 9-3, 9-6. Semi-finals: Viggers beat Marriott, 9-1, 9-3, 5-9, 9-1; Walker beat King, 9-0, 9-5, 9-1.
