Sellers swamp buyers
NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier yesterday, in spite of signs of a recovery during the day as sellers again emerged to swamp buyers. The all-ordinaries index lost 5.2 points to close at a sixmonth low of 689.5. Brokers said that the selling pressure which had produced
the 40-point loss in the allordinaries index so far this week was caused by the weakness on the Wall Street stockmarket, concern about firming United States interest rates, and an easier international bullion price. A further negative report from the Jabiru No. 2 well, in the Timor Sea, saw BHP lose its early gains to be steady. Ampol Exploration fell 5c and Weeks Australia Bc. There was little reason for the market to reverse its bearish trend when overseas influences remained negative. Industrials.—ACl, 172; AFL, 130; ANI, 245; ANZ, 544; APM, 189; ASCProp, 95; AWA, 430;
