Plan to reduce backlog
PA Wellington More than 1000 freight waggons were waiting for ferries in Picton and Wellington yesterday, but the Railways Corporation has a fast-track operation under way to move the backlog. The corporation will use all available space to transport the freight across Cook Strait on heavy trucks as part of Operation Topdeck. The operation, which started on Tuesday afternoon, uses extra space on the vehicle deck above the rail deck.
Although the operation depends on how many vehicles are booked on ferries, the corporation expects all freight to be cleared in a week to IV2 weeks.
