Crash victims cut free
Firemen used “the jaws of life” to free three people, one seriously injured, from a badly damaged car after it and a truck collided at the intersection of Linwood Avenue and Dyers Road yesterday morning. One of the injured, Malcolm Montrose, aged 26, was seriously ill in the intensive-care unit at Christchurch Hospital last
evening. Two other occupants of the car, Diane Lowe, aged 26, and Evelyn Lowe, aged four, both of Sumner, were last evening reported in a fairly comfortable condition at the hospital. The accident happened about 11 a.m. and the last person freed, Mr Montrose, was taken from the vehicle about midday. Sheets of
plastic were used to shelter the injured from heavy rain as they were cut free and ambulancemen treated them at the scene.
Witnesses said that as a result of the accident the car appeared to be jammed under the deck and the chassis of the truck. The truck’s driver was not injured.
