Dashing sprint

Godfree was one of the most impressive trialists in limited training on the No. 1 grass at Riecarton yesterday. In one of his first trials at speed after a summer spell, he hurried over 600 m in 35. and did the job in stvle.

Godfree has not raced since the Canterbury Jockey Club's December meeting, and was gelded after he was taken out of training. The North Island-bound Noble Jewel sprinted 800 in 50. and the final 600 in 37. In The Glen, a winner over 1600 m at Riecarton last week could have easily bettered her 53 for 800. She has been entered for the Wrightson Handicap on the first day of the Otago winter meeting. Extra Quick, a form runner for John Healey’s Richmond stable in the Members' Improvers at Oamaru. was another given an undemanding 800 m sprint. She finished in 51.6. Super Comet and Sovereign Dean, members of Bevan Laming’s team engaged at Oamaru. galloped 1400 m but were not timed Later, their stablemate Hesten covered a round of hurdles maintaining a good standard of jumping at speed.
