J. W. Early: Whatever the merits of Professor Geering's views as philosophy, he should for the sake of clarity find them a name other than Christianity. If the term is to mean anything, it cannot be stretched to include the positions that God both does and does not exist, that Jesus Christ was and was not his son, etc. Liberal theology appears to be proposing a secular self-fulfilment philosophy salted with “God-language." While it may possibly help some to an awareness of spirituality, it is not to be confused with contemporary mainstream Christianity, which is. as ever, centred inescapably on a God who actually exists. Professor Geering’s views are not. in fact, particularly new. Similar beliefs to his have always existed alongside Judaism and Christianity, but have usually been described as paganism. atheism heresy, and so on What is indeed radical is the startling idea of labelling them as Christianity.
