Employment for Japanese
Sir, — The plan of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, to offjjr employment here to Japanese
(May 23), does allow for working visas for New Zealanders in Japan. This will be an opportunity for our students to further their Japanese language and cultural skills. But the Australian participation in such an operation results in a far greater number of visiting Japanese than Australians going to Japan. A reciprocal agreement between the University of Hawaii and the University of Hong Kong brought hundreds of Chinese to the Hawaii campus. Few Hawaiians see a reason to go to university in Hong Kong. Idealistic schemes such as these can result in some hostility on the part of the losing partner and be contrary to the desired effect. Has the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Overseas Trade an idea on how numbers can be balanced? — Yours, etc.,
J. D. RUCINSKI. May 23, 1984.
