Clamp on aid to fishing
Wellington reporter Government departments and agencies are now implementing the Govern-ment-imposed moratorium on assistance to the inshore fishery. The moratorium was imposed in early April and applies to new approvals for assistance under existing schemes. This step had been taken ‘•because of the serious over-fishing and over-capi-talisation problems being experienced,” said the Minister of Agriculture and
Fisheries, Mr Maclntyre. Those departments and agencies which have been checking how the moratorium will affect their particular schemes include the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Rural Bank, Trade and Industry Department, Ministry of Works and Development, and the Treasury. Each organisation will report to its Minister on the implications of the moratorium, and then detailed statements on the schemes affected will be published.
