S.I. junior golfers

Two Canterbury players, Mark Tamuta (Templeton) and Richard Hurley (Waimairi Beach), have been named in the South Island team to contest the Commercial Union New Zealand junior golf tournament at Feilding in September. The others are G. Johnson (Roxburgh), S. Thompson (Hokitika), P. Giles (Green Acres) and P. Cassidy (Dunstan).

Johnson won the twc-day South Island tournament, which was reduced to 36 holes because of rain. His total was 147, five over par, and five strokes ahead of Thompson. Geoff Stephens (Titirangi) won the North Island boys’ championship at Paraparaumu Beach. His total of 220 for the 54-hole event was six better than Chris Perks (Manawatu) and John Pihema (Whitby).
