Crowe’s helping hand

NZPA-Reuter London The New Zealand cricketer Martin Crowe, played a decisive hand in helping his Somerset team knock the Benson and Hedges one-day 55-over cup holder, Middlesex, out of the competition at Taunton yesterday. Middlesex after a slow start, was well placed at 108 for two before Crowe took a brilliant diving catch running in from mid-wicket. Then he captured three for three in nine balls with his medium-paced inswingers to reduce Middlesex to 118 for

six before Paul Downton and Neil Williams took it to a respectable 189 for nine. Somerset made an ideal start when its stand-in opener, Nigel Popplewell, and Peter Roebuck added 114 in 33 overs. Then lan Botham, well supported by Crowe, who finished on 19 not out, took charge as Somerset romped to victory. Botham blasted an unbeaten 48 off 31 balls. Somerset won with 9.5 overs to spare and qualified for the quarter-finals with either Kent or Sussex from its group.
