Top clothing apprentice
New Zealand’s top clothing apprentice, Alan Kerr, aged 19, practises his skill as a cutter for his employer, Marcol Manufacturing, in Christchurch yesterday.
Mr Kerr was chosen as this year’s winning apprentice after scoring the third highest marks in his Trade Certificate examination and an interview with the Apparel Training Board. He was presented with the Wilkinson Shears Award at the national conference of the New Zealand Clothing and Footwear Institute last evening.
Mr Kerr worked as an apprentice tailor for one year after leaving Christchurch Boys’ High School, and has worked as a cutter for Marcol Manufacturing for the last two years. His ambition is to be involved in the design and pattern-mak-ing side of the industry.
