Nicaragua fund

A Nicaraguan support fund has been launched by the Christchurch Latin America Group. The spokesman for the Latin America Group, Dr Trevor Jackson, said the mining of Nicaraguan ports was just “the tip of the iceberg” as far as United States-backed attacks are concerned.

“The tragedy of such attacks is not only in the destruction they cause but also in the way it forces the Nicaraguans to divert resources from the real needs of health and education to defence,” he said.

In the last five years the Nicaraguans have made great progress in reducing illiteracy, providing better education services and in eradicating or reducing infectious diseases.

“Nicaragua needs our solidarity and support. We will be raising funds for the next month to send to aid and development projects in Nicaragua to show there are people here who believe in their right to development and selfdetermination in spite of the United States-backed aggression,” said Dr Jackson.
