Cameroon death sentences
NZPA-Reuter Yaounde Forty-six people had been sentenced to death by a military tribunal for their part in a foiled coup attempt last month, State-run Cameroon radio said yesterday. The announcement did not say whether the sen-
tences had already been implemented but informed sources said that the figure tallied with rumours about the numbers already secretly executed. More than 1000 people were detained after the coup attempt on April 6, for which the President, Mr Paul Biya, blamed dissident
members of his presidential republican guard. The announcement said that 183 of the detainees had been sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to 20 years while another 183 had been acquitted. It said that 617 people had been released. The trial of 22 others was continuing.
