Title fight still on
NZPA-Reuter New York A new promotional group trying to salvage the finan-cially-troubled Larry Holmes-Gerrie Coetzee world heavyweight boxing title fight said yesterday the bout would be held as planned in Las Vegas on June 8. The group, known as Joe Louis Memorial Sports, made its . announcement after the fight's main financial backer pulled out. prompting the co-promoter. Caesars Palace, to announce that the fight had been cancelled. “The money is there and the fight will go on, but not at Caesars Palace.” a source involved with the new group said. The source said the bout is likely to be held at the new, 18,000-seat Thomas Mack Centre. Holmes will be paid SUSB million for defending his International Boxing Federation title for the first time after relinquishing the World Boxing Council crown he held for seven years. Coetzee, the South African who now lives in Huntington Beach, California, has been guaranteed SUS 3 million for the fight, for which his World Boxing Association title will also be at stake.
