Juventus wins Cup
NZPA-AP Basle Juventus, of Turin, won the European soccer Cup Winners Cup by beating Portugal’s Porto, 2-1, in Basle yesterday. The Italian team built up its victory in the first half. The right winger, Beniamino Vignola, scored in the thirteenth minute with a precise shot from the edge of the penalty area. Sousa equalised for Porto in the twenty-ninth minute through a cannon-ball shot from long range. The Polish striker, Zbigniew Boniek, who is expected to quit the Italian team next season, gave Juventus its first ever Cup Winners Cup in the fortyfirst minute, scoring from close range despite desperate tackles by two Portuguese defenders. In spite of losing, Porto played a better, faster game and often forced the Italians to purely defensive play. Juventus, fresh from winning the Italian national title — its twenty-first — suffered from poor performances by some key players such as the French midfielder, Michel Platini, and the Italian national stars, Marco Tardelli and Paolo Rossi.
