Lewis in third round
NZPA-Reuter Rome New Zealand’s Chris Lewis, the No. 12 seed, beat an Argentinian, Roberto Arguello, in the second round of the Italian Open tennis championships in Rome yesterday. Lewis won the first set, 64, before slumping, 0-6, in the second. But he recovered to take the third 6-3.
Earlier, the French Open champion, Yannick Noah.
twice pulled back from the brink of defeat to win his first-round match against a Brazilian qualifier, Julio Goes. The third seed finally won. 5-7, 6-4, 7-6. But he had to use all his powers of concentration and skill to overcome the Brazilian, ranked 170th in the world. Mats Wilander, the Swedish star, was eliminated, 6-3, 6-0, by an Italian, Francesco Lancellotti.
