C.S.O. funding still in the balance

The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will have to wait to find out if a meeting yesterday with its financial supporters was successful. The meeting, called to discuss the future and funding of the orchestra, was attended by the mayors and chairmen of the metropolitan local bodies, chairmen of their policy, finance and grants committees, and the chairman of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, Sir Michael Fowler. The meeting had gone well, but, as expected, no concrete decisions had been made, said the orchestra’s manager, Mr Chris Brodrick. “We put our case and there was a frank discussion. Now we have to wait to see what happens when they go back to their councils and consider our grant,” he said. The orchestra wants its funding system changed and has asked for $49,000 this year. In actual terms its grants were about the same

as they were 10 years ago, but in real terms, allowing for inflation, they were about 75 per cent less, Mr Brodrick said.
