Special meeting over Olympics
NZPA-Reuter Lausanne, Switzerland The president of the International Olympic Committee, Mr Juan Antonio Samaranch, has called for an extraordinary meeting of the Olympic movement in Lausanne next Friday to discuss the crisis over the Soviet decision to shun the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Mr Samaranch released the text of a letter from President Reagan, giving fresh assurances that the United States will respect
the Olympic charter and provide for the security of all athletes. “This is a very, very important letter. It contains a new element and in my opinion gives all the assurances on security that the Soviets are asking for,” he said. Mr Reagan’s letter, addressed to Mr Samaranch, says: “I have instructed agencies of the Federal Government to co-operate fully with Olympic and local officials to ensure the safety of all participants.”
