Church eases policy on remarriage
The Anglican Church in New Zealand has eased its policy on remarriage. The General Synod, meeting on its final day at Christchurch yesterday, approved a bill which means divorcees can now remarry in the Church without the permission of a bishop. The bill, amending the Church’s Marriage of Divorced Persons Statute, was presented earlier this week by the Venerable M. R. Smart, of the Waiapu Diocese. He argued that the decision to marry divorcees should be left to the minister of the Church. The procedure of applying for a bishop’s licence was an “unnecessary piece of bureaucracy,” he said.
