Lewis beaten by Noah

NZPA-Reuter Hamburg Chris Lewis, of New Zealand, has been knocked out of the West German Open tennis championships by the titleholder, Yannick Noah. The Frenchman needed just 52 minutes to beat Lewis 6-1, 6-2 in their third round tie. The third seeded Jose Higueras of Spain, winner in 1982 and a finalist last year,

was also knocked out yesterday. He lost to American, Gene Mayer, 6-4, 6-3. Higueras’ defeat makes it even more likely that top seed Mats Wilander of Sweden and Noah will contest the final tomorrow. Wilander dropped the opening set to the West German Damir Keretic 6-3, but found his form to take the next two in convincing style 6-0, 6-2.

©ln Sutton, England, New Zealanders had mixed fortunes in the quarterfinals of a British tournament. David Mustard progressed to the semi-finals of the men’s singles with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over 0. Rahnasto (Finland), but Julie Richardson was beaten in the women’s quarter-finals in straight sets by an American, K. Kinney.
